The 2018 14th Annual Chinese American Film Festival Opening Ceremony was held at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in Hollywood. This year’s festival was a much-anticipated film celebration; participants included thousands of film and TV industry leaders, political figures, celebrities, overseas Chinese community leaders and business elites. Chairman of CAFF & CATF, and President of EDI Media Inc., Mr. James Su, Consul General of the Consulate General of People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, Mr. Zhang Ping, Vice President of China Film Co., Ltd, Ren Yue , Supervisor of San Bernardino County, Mr. Curt Hagman, Chair, International Committee, Producers Guild of America, Ms. Elizabeth Dell，made opening remarks as officiating guests. Internationally known celebrity Li Bingbing and Chow Yun-Fat were awarded the best actor and actress.
CAFF & CATF is an annual event hosted by EDI Media Inc., supported by the State Film Bureau, State Administration of China National Press, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the U.S., Producers Guild of America (PGA), Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) and sponsored by China Film Co., China Film Overseas Promotion Company, Film Channel, China film and TV Producers Association, China TV drama production industry, Capital Radio and TV Program Production Association. Variety is the official media partner of CATF and CAFF. This year, the 2018 14th Annual Chinese American Film Festival Golden Angel Awards Ceremony will broadcast to global audiences through BTV, Shanghai Dragon TV, CCTV6, IQiyi and ICitiTV.
The chairman of CAFF & CATF, President of EDI Media Inc., James Su expressed his thanks to everyone for coming to the 14th Annual Chinese American Film Festival. CAFF is not only a platform for cooperation, but a chance to contribute and promote the Chinese-American cultural exchange. Good films and television projects are an extension of every culture which is the backbone of a nation. He hopes CAFF can continue to make contributions to the integration of Chinese and American cultures; and wished that the over 500 works of this exhibition to have great success and encouraged all the filmmakers for their efforts.
Mr. Zhang Ping, Consul General of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles, said that the development of the Chinese film industry is the result of Chinese filmmakers’ efforts and international cooperation. The close cooperation between the Chinese film industry and Hollywood not only brings prosperity to the film industry of the two countries but also brings their societies closer together. We should celebrate not only the achievements in the film industry, but also the progress in enhancing mutual understanding and friendship. In the end, he sincerely extended his congratulation to all the winners.
Ren Yue, the Vice President of China Film Co., Ltd, on behalf of the China Film Co. extended a warm welcome to CAFF & CATF Organizing Committee, filmmakers, and film institutions from both U.S. and China, and thanked all the guests and friends for attending the opening ceremony, supporting the Chinese American Film Festival and the development of Chinese film. 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up. In the past 40 years, with the development of the Chinese economy and society, Chinese film directors have been through the fourth, fifth and sixth generations to now a whole new generation, from the old film era to a new full digitization and utilization of VR. With the global multiculturalism and technological interaction, Chinese filmmakers insist on an innovational and open ideology to promote the industrial upgrade and development, and contributed numerous excellent films to spread the Chinese culture all over the world. Films make our lives better and reinforce the friendship between the people of the two countries. She sincerely wished the cooperation will result in a win-win situation, cultural exchange and the continued development of Chinese American films.
Elizabeth Dell, Chair, International Committee, Producers Guild of America, thanked Chairman Su and all the staff of CAFF. CAFF is a platform for Chinese and American filmmakers for understanding and in depth discussions, which is not only a bridge for film and television industries, but also a chance of enhancing the friendship and cultural exchange. She concluded her remarks by wishing all the award-winners and CAFF great success.

2018 is the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up, and is also the 60th anniversary of the beginning of Chinese TV dramas. The 14th CAFF & CATF organizing committee set up a special unit “A Wonderful 40 Years” and a special award “Chinese Cultural Communication Award”, to encourage the participation of film and television works of various subjects. These works also have the opportunity to be broadcast on the “A Wonderful 40 Years” special series on ICitiTV, allowing more American audiences to experience the essence of Chinese film, television from the past 40 years, thus promoting the Chinese culture.
The 2018 CAFF & CATF will be held from October 27th to November 30th, with main events such as: The Film and television Summit, Golden Angel Awards Ceremony, Co-Production Film Summit, Co-Production Television summit, Chinese American Film and TV Showcase, film-related events, seminars and over 200 screenings in Hollywood, Los Angeles, San Francisco and across America, this year our film festival cooperated with Mobile Theater to provide a broader platform for the cooperation between the Chinese and U.S. film and television industry. Each year, more than 300 Chinese-American film and TV companies cooperate on CAFF’s platform and more than 500 outstanding Chinese and American films are showcased and screened. The number of screening audiences exceeds 1.2 million.
