The area inhabited by Yi people in Liangshan, Sichuan, is strategically situated and not easily accessible with tough folk customs. It has been an excellent military stronghold since ancient times. Cruelly hunted by the 500,000 Kuomintang troops, the 30,000 men and women of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army strategically crossed the Jinsha River, and came to Liangshan on the Long March in May 1935. Under the planning of Mao Zedong and other C.P.C. leaders, Huili Meeting and Lizhou Meeting were held, and the national policy of equality and solidarity were disseminated and implemented as the saying went “the Red Army and the Yi people are of one family.” The advance column experienced all kinds of hardships and perils. General Liu Bocheng and Chief Xiaoyedan of the Yi people became sworn brothers by the Yihai Lake after drinking wine mixed with chicken blood as a token of their oath, and won over the trust and support of the Yi people. The Red Army successfully passed through the area inhabited by the Yi people. With reserved strength, they saved time to dash through the Luding Bridge, to rush across the Dadu River and to push northward, thus crushing Chiang Kai Shek’s plot to have the Red Army wiped out in Liangshan like General Shi Dakai and his troops of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.
